The Higher Certificate in Software Development aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and software development skills that will enhance their employment opportunities, while also providing a platform for pursuing further education. The programme will equip students with essential theoretical and practical skills in software development, specifically focusing on topics such as programming languages, software development methodologies, database management systems, operating systems and web development.

Course Fee:
€250 per module


Higher Certificate in Software Development (Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications).
(Single module certification possible).


Graduates of the Higher Certificate may progress to stage three of the Bachelor of in Software Development programme which is also offered part-time by night: BSc in Software Development



The Higher Certificate in Software Development is a part-time level 6 programme designed to provide students with the an introduction to computer science in stage one with modules in Programming Fundamentals, Web Development Fundamentals, Computer Architecture, Computer Security Principles, Mathematics for Computer Science, Modular Programming, Introduction to Databases, Operating Systems in Practice, Networking Fundamentals, Discrete Mathematics and Physical Computing.

The second stage of the Higher Certificate programme builds on the stage one foundation and has a deeper focus on software development with modules in Object-Oriented Programming, Requirements Engineering, Data Structures & Algorithms, OO Analysis & Design, Database Design, NoSQL Data Architectures, and many more.


Career Opportunities

Potential areas of employment include working as a Software Developer, Software Tester, Software Support Engineer or Database Developer, to name but a few career possibilities.

Non-Standard Applicants: Mature Students, FETAC (now QQI) Level 5, are particularly welcome.

Standard Applicants: Leaving Certificate grade D3 at Ordinary or Higher Level in 5 subjects including Mathematics, and either English or Irish.
