The main University research activity is primarily organised around three Strategic Research Clusters that reflect the MTU current dominant strategic research strengths and critical mass. These clusters support internal as well as external collaboration, multidisciplinary research and postgraduate education and research-teaching integration. Staff and postgraduate students from the School of Science and the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering are involved in the BIO-Explore Cluster. It incorporates research in the area of bio-analysis and bio-control and also comprises a number of research groups:
This cluster performs research, delivers learning and enables knowledge transfer to industry in the field of embedded systems, the “invisible technology” that monitors and controls electrical and electronic products, communications, transport, machinery and industrial processes. The cluster focuses particularly on the networking of embedded systems, where wireless smart objects, sensors and augmented materials will adaptively collaborate to enable the emerging Internet of Things. The Networked Embedded Systems Cluster has 45 researchers and is in the process of constructing a dedicated research centre and building for its work. It primarily involves staff and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering.
Photonics is the science of generating and harnessing light, and impacts a wide range of areas, including telecommunications, gas sensing, medical imaging and astronomy. Photonics research and postgraduate education at MTU primarily involves staff and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Science. The photonics cluster incorporates three research groups.
